In every society, senior citizens act as an essential human archive, serving as living bridges between generations and holding years of accumulated knowledge, skills, and experiences. Their experiences are not merely personal memories but collective wisdom that enriches national identity. As countries now pursue development and modernisation, our elders remain a foundational pillar of progress and a human link to the heritage that shapes who we are and who we aspire to be. On October 1 every year, the world observes the International Day of Older Persons, a moment to honour this esteemed generation and celebrate their contributions to human development. On this occasion, we would like to express our profound gratitude to this generation, which plays a foundational role in building the nation and remains an essential pillar in safeguarding our values and cultural heritage. Our seniors are not merely witnesses to history but its narrators and protectors. In their minds reside the intricate details of societal life before and after the Union's founding. Through their stories and experiences, the essence of the Emirati identity comes to life, and the values we hold dear are reinforced across generations. Oral histories have long been a cornerstone of our heritage, and seniors are its lifeblood. It is through them that we have inherited the sea chants of pearl diving expeditions, the proverbs rich with timeless wisdom, the tales that once echoed across desert and maritime evenings, and the intricate traditional crafts. Without their voices and memories, these treasures risk fading into silence, severing the roots that anchor us to our past. The role of seniors extends far beyond preserving and passing on heritage. They are educators in the truest sense, instilling in their descendants the values of respect, cooperation, and solidarity - values that define the Emirati society. Their influence shapes our identity as well as social cohesion. In a world marked by constant change, seniors offer a steady anchor. They serve as a bridge linking past and present, helping us maintain a balanced identity amid rapid changes. As we engage with diverse global cultures, they help younger generations navigate the complexities of modern life without losing sight of their roots. This connection fosters dialogue across generations, one in which the wisdom of the past informs the aspirations of the future, and tradition and progress walk hand in hand. This intergenerational exchange creates a symbiotic relationship where youth build upon the wisdom of their elders, ensuring societal continuity. Recognising their importance, the Ministry of Culture empowers seniors and involves them in passing on their knowledge and Emirati legacy. Initiatives such as 'Al Nalia,' which aim to incorporate culture into the educational curriculum, pair seniors with youth in hands-on cultural experiences. Similarly, platforms like the artisans' pavilion at the 'Make it in the Emirates' initiative showcase the skills and creativity of senior craftsmen and women. These efforts do more than just honour the past. They reaffirm the seniors' role as indispensable contributors to the cultural and creative future of the UAE and a bridge between tradition and modernity, thereby strengthening national identity and enriching the country's cultural landscape. Our appreciation for seniors cannot be limited to a single commemorative day. It is a continuous commitment, reflected in national policy designed by our wise leadership, who have long recognised their enduring role in the nation's journey, ensuring their dignity, care, and inclusion remain priorities. We affirm with sincerity: Seniors are not only our role models but also both a guiding light on our path and a crucial link in our identity chain. They embody loyalty and authenticity, ensuring that the spirit of giving, unity, and cultural pride continues to shape every chapter of our shared journey.
